What is meditation? When should we do it? What happens in meditation?

What is meditation?

Meditation is a technique of reading the mind. We sit still with our back straight and see the inputs given by the mind. See and analyse the thoughts. We should not get involved in the thoughts. We should see it as though we are watching a movie. These thoughts will give answer to the questions that we have in mind. To start off this understanding is enough.

When should we do it?

This has to be done only when the intellect is developed. But people first start with mediation and they fail.

What happens in meditation?

This is clearly depicted in a tamil movie called 7am arrivu (7th Buddhi).

In this movie, he shows India before 1500 years.India was the richest country in the world. Most people were  yogis. They knew the best medicines, best warriors, best intellect etc. One person was a master of master. He was the hero of the movie -Suriya.

This movie also creates a controversy as though the neighbouring countries learned the art from us and using it against us. This is irrelevant for us so I am skipping.

Then the movie turns to today. There is a scientist (heroine shruti hasan). She is doing a research saying that,

  • DNA determines the nature of a person.
  • Suppose I have 100 good qualities in my DNA and 50 bad qualities. All these qualities are not active. Only some are active. This made my nature with certain qualities.
  • These good qualities in my DNA have come from my ancestors.
  • The inactive DNA can be activated and I can get all the good qualities of the ancestors.

She finds a person who is living today and his DNA is 83% matching with the super talented person who lived 1500 years ago. This person now has only some DNA active. She does some research and activates his inactive DNA and he becomes a person with similar qualities as the person who lived 1500 years ago.

In the end of the movie, the last dialogue is “This DNA which is activated in the lab can also be activated by human efforts”.

What does that mean? In meditation inactive DNA is activated and a person gets all the strength that his ancestors had.

Harvard study reveals that meditation activates DNA. Check this http://drdavidhamilton.com/?p=180

To sum up,

  1. If we develop our intellect we can avoid stress and make decisions with clarity.
  2. We can develop the basic intellect by adopting the Indian life style.
  3. Once this basic is developed we can try the lessons prescribed by me along with the reading of scriptures.
  4. Then if the intellect is developed. We can sit and meditate to find solutions to the unanswered questions.

As per Swami, if we cannot do anything; then to retain the intellect that we have -everyday when we go to sleep recollect every incident happened in the day. This will take only 5 minutes. Initially, we may not be able to recollect everything. But later we will be able to do it completely. Don’t be judge-mental (right or wrong ). Just watch. This exercise will help us to retain the intellect that we have.

There is no person in the word is born without an intellect. It is up to us to develop it. If we develop it we become a vedantian or yogi. If we don’t develop it we become insane. This can be developed only with self efforts. We need Concentration, Consistency and co operation.

One story to tell you guys about co operation – When napoleon conquered so many places inIndia. His father asked him to get 2 things fromIndia,

  1. Bhagavad Gita.
  2. Flute (music instrument used by Lord Krishna).

Napoleons adviser said sir it is difficult to understand the Bhagavad Gita so you may have to take a learned person from India to explain it to us. Then they searched for the learned person. Everybody suggested a swami who was sitting under a tree. Napoleon and his team went and stood before him. Napoleon asked him “what do you want? Tell me…I will give you”. The swami said just move I was sitting here to get the sun and you are blocking.

All of us have the capability to develop the intellect on our own. We don’t need anybody help. Let us not disturb the others who want to do it. Let us co operate.

Some facts and examples are taken from this book. This book talks about the fundamental need to develop the intellect. The author runs an vedanta academy in pune.
