Ayurveda and Yoga are sister science. Ayurveda deals more with the health of the body and the yoga deals with purifying the mind and consciousness. If the body is neglected then it will be a hindrance to the spiritual path.
What is Yoga?
The Sanskrit word योग (Yog) means reunion.
Reunion of our consciousness with the Cosmic / Universal consciousness.
What is this consciousness?
Before understanding consciousness we need to understand the koshas.
Koshas are the layers are the sheaths which cover the consciousness.
There are five layers which are covering this light of consciousness. Yoga is a method which will help us to remove these layers and reunite our consciousness with the Cosmic consciousness.
- 1st layer above the consciousness is Anandamaya Kosha- layer of Bliss.
- 2nd layer is Vijnanamaya Kosha – layer of knowledge including intellect and intuition.
- 3rd layer is Manamaya Kosha – layer of mind.
- 4th layer is Pranamaya Kosha – Layer of energy or life force.
- 5th layer is Annamaya kosha – Layer of food body or the physical body.
The Physical body is also called the food body as it is a development of the food we eat.
We know by now what is Prana or life force and how it affects our emotions.
This mind uses the concepts in the vijnanamaya Kosha to develop thoughts.
All the concepts are stored in Vijnanamaya kosha. When we change the understanding of the concepts the wisdom appears and gives a transformation.
The Anandamaya kosha, requires no explanation.
On top of all which creates a problem is the Ego. It does not form part of the koshas but need to be surrendered to uncover the consciousness.
If the body has an ache the ego will say “I have a pain”. If we are mentally upset the ego will say ” I am upset”. If we don’t have energy and feeling tired the ego will say ” I am tired”. It is important somebody takes the ownership. But ego gets attached to unhappiness than happiness.
There are people who always talk about sadness like nobody is there for them or they are sick or their fate is like that etc. Such people because of the habit to talk like that will create situations so that the ego is always unhappy.
It is very important to surrender ego. This will happen with better understanding of the concepts.
This technique of yoga will also help us to understand the concepts better and inturn will help us to surrender the ego.
Now, let’s come to what is consciousness?
How all these body, energy, mind, intellect work? There has to be some power which will make all these work. This some power is called the consciousness.
I have this power, you have this power and all of us have this power.
The universe is having this power everywhere.
How does the plants know – bud has to blossom in the morning. It is because of the power of consciousness.
Even animals have this.
This consciousness is the super power or God.
If we realise this then we are called enlightened soul.
How to get enlightened?
There are several methods or techniques given in yoga to achieve this state of bliss.
All of us are doing everything in life for happiness. We are trying to search it with the objects that we have and with the people around us.
Actually we don’t have to search for it, it is always with us. Only thing is that it is covered with certain layers. Rather than searching for happiness leave the layers that is covering it so that we can see what we have!
This process gives more contentment and happiness.
